I really liked this, it's a great starter guide if you're just beginning an interest in Greek Mythology! Eminently readable guide to gods, heroes and key women of Greek mythology:-) While a good, well organized, basic reference book for young people, I also found Albert's book an easy, quick, entertaining read to refresh my memory about legends I had heard and read about decades ago。 My particular fascination in the ancient Greek world is Homer's epic stories of the Trojan War and this book provides details I did not know about some of the principal players like Agamemnon and his family。 Albert als Eminently readable guide to gods, heroes and key women of Greek mythology:-) While a good, well organized, basic reference book for young people, I also found Albert's book an easy, quick, entertaining read to refresh my memory about legends I had heard and read about decades ago。 My particular fascination in the ancient Greek world is Homer's epic stories of the Trojan War and this book provides details I did not know about some of the principal players like Agamemnon and his family。 Albert also makes the stories more relatable by mentioning recent movies and books that provide their own take on Greek gods and heroes, and she does not shy away from mentioning the misogyny inherent in many tales of powerful gods and men who take what they want from women, divine and mortal, from Persephone to Medea。 It's good to have a more modern sensibility interposed on the original stories。I read the book cover to cover in a few hours。 Despite the many names covered, it was a really readable assembly of information。Thanks to Adams Media and NetGalley for providing a complimentary copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review。 。。。more

A wonderful handbook that hits all of the important figures in Greek mythology, covers the big stories, and whets the appetite for more。I like how she covers some of the more problematic aspects of the stories because those represent elements in Western culture that plague us to this day。 The classical period was marvelous and wonderful, but it was far from ideal。

This book briefly introduced the major figures in Greek mythology。 I felt a bit like reading short stories about all the gods, titans and heroes。 They all had better and worse events in their lives (there were some among whom I couldn’t regret their fate at all)。 I liked the storytelling and the illustrations。 The one thing I regretted was that there wasn’t a drawing of everyone。 Overall it was good to read, I learned that the gods didn’t have a completely carefree life either and unfortunately This book briefly introduced the major figures in Greek mythology。 I felt a bit like reading short stories about all the gods, titans and heroes。 They all had better and worse events in their lives (there were some among whom I couldn’t regret their fate at all)。 I liked the storytelling and the illustrations。 The one thing I regretted was that there wasn’t a drawing of everyone。 Overall it was good to read, I learned that the gods didn’t have a completely carefree life either and unfortunately women didn’t have the best role, sometimes they had to become something else to survive or strike back。 。。。more

Liv Albert is the creator, host and producer of the podcast "Let's Talk About Myths, baby!" which has been running now since July 2017。 It is one of the most popular podcasts in Canada, as she tells it like it is, and doesn't mince words。"Greek Mythology: The Gods, Goddesses, and Heroes Handbook" is written in the same style, and portrays the Greek and Roman myths in an honest, but humourous way that acts as an excellent introduction for those people who have not taken or at least not referenced Liv Albert is the creator, host and producer of the podcast "Let's Talk About Myths, baby!" which has been running now since July 2017。 It is one of the most popular podcasts in Canada, as she tells it like it is, and doesn't mince words。"Greek Mythology: The Gods, Goddesses, and Heroes Handbook" is written in the same style, and portrays the Greek and Roman myths in an honest, but humourous way that acts as an excellent introduction for those people who have not taken or at least not referenced the myths for sometime。The first part is a basic introduction to Greek mythology and the creation mythos that surrounds it。 The second part deals with biographies of the Olympians themselves, e。g。 Zeus, Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Here, Athena, Aphrodite, Apollo, Artemis, Hephaestus, Area, Hermes, Dionysus, and Hestia。 Some of these are more important than others, but for the most part these are the ones that most people have learned about in school。 There are also related stores about Persephone, Hectate, and Cerebus。The third part deals with the deities Prometheus, Leto, Daphna, and Erosalong with related stores dealing with Pandora, Echo & Narcissus and Typhon & Echidna。 The fourth part is the largest and deals with a number of the Heroes and Mortals, such as Heracles, Perseus, Jason, Medea, Daedalus, Oedipus, and more。 Once again there are accompanying stories about the Minotaur, Icarus, Medusa, and more。Overall this is a great review of classical Greek mythology, with the twist of relating it to the many modern interpretations of the myths。The artwork in this book is by Sara Richard, and is quite stunning in its styling, and I hope that prints of these panels will eventually be available on her site www。sararichard。comHighly recommended。 Looking forward the the second volume (Yes, Simon & Schuster, this is a hint)。 。。。more

While the scope of this book can only hint at why, it makes for an excellent jumping-off point for people who want to learn more。Overall, this is an impressive package lovingly put together by people who clearly know their stuff。 It serves as a primer that makes it a point to not forgive the rampaging misogyny of ancient times, thereby impressing upon readers that that stuff has happened but is not okay, which honestly is a reassuring thing for readers who might be alienated by said misogyny from delving into the riches of mythos。 It also underscores the fact that you can love the classics without buying into their baser aspects, as Ms Albert does here by not sugarcoating any of the bad stuff。 Bonus: she also points out the sex-positive and queer aspects of the myths that have often been obscured in the last few centuries。 It's so fascinating to see her do the work of viewing these stories explicitly through the eyes of modern progressive society。 The only flaw of this book is that it made me hungry for so much more。Greek Mythology: The Gods, Goddesses, And Heroes Handbook by Liv Albert with illustrations by Sara Richard will be published tomorrow March 30th 2021 by Adams Media and is available from all good booksellers, including Bookshop! This book was very fun to read and it was very important for one of my assignments。 This really helped and I actually learned many stories that I didn't know about。 I always am interested to read more about Greek mythology and this book really helped me learn something new about Greek mythology。 The art style was very beautiful and there were scenes that the story was describing。 This book was very fun to read and it was very important for one of my assignments。 This really helped and I actually learned many stories that I didn't know about。 I always am interested to read more about Greek mythology and this book really helped me learn something new about Greek mythology。 The art style was very beautiful and there were scenes that the story was describing。 。。。more
